Studying Self
by Alan Simmons

The real fun in life comes from continuously learning, and
the best learning is always about self. Within that simple
truth lies opportunity for ourselves and for those we serve.
As we gain knowledge of ourselves, make new choices about how we act,
react and interact, we become ever more aware of the positive influence
we can have on those around us. Consider how your mood and behavior affect
others. Are you the person your friends and colleagues gravitate toward
in times of stress, or joy? What have you learned about how and what you
think that could be shared with them to their benefit?
Teach via your actions, that studying self can be a rewarding
and fun experience. Next time you and a companion are stuck in traffic
resist the temptation to be angry or frustrated. Use the time to learn
from each other. Add a humorous element to the conversation with questions:
Which of these drivers, do you suppose, started out today looking for
someone to upset? Guess where he might be going and why. Make up excuses
for being late. Consider what your alternatives are at this moment in
this place.
By showing that one of our most powerful tools is the ability to control
our own thoughts and reactions, you can show others how to do the same.
A core principle of personal motivation rests in observing what we can,
or cannot, do about any circumstance or event, then acting accordingly.
As those around you see evidence of peace within you, they'll wonder how
you maintain that state, perhaps ask questions, examine their own behavior,
and maybe even start to see that the ability exists also within them.
